Radioactive Waste Treatment Centre at the Belene NPP

The Client of the Project is the Russian company “Atomstroyexport” (ASE) and the End User is the Bulgarian “National Electric Company” (NEK). At the site of Belene in Bulgaria ASE will build two 1000 MW pressurized water reactors. It is expected that Belene NPP will start operating in 2016. NUKEM Technologies GmbH is responsible for the “turn key” engineering of radioactive waste treatment facilities.

The NUKEM Belene Project has started in September 2009 and consists of four facilities for the treatment of liquid and solid radioactive waste and the storage of the products. The waste will arise during the normal operation of the reactors. The facilities will be able to convert the waste into a stable form ready for long-term or interim storage.
